The group went on a jolly to the Doncaster Railway Museum.
Chris Barron talked about how the largest and most significant collections of railway memorabilia in the country(if not in the world) came to be accumulated in a redundant water tower at a school in Doncaster – a town with a railway heritage. Part of this collection is exhibited. There is also an art gallery within the museum with some fine paintings, one of which is by Terence Cuneo.
A DONCASTER DELIGHT
The Railway Group’s outing to Doncaster museum in April was excellent and enjoyed by all. A new museum built in a very unique way, a wonderful art gallery and a very informative talk given by Chris Barron, one of the trustees of perhaps the largest collection of railway artefacts in the world, which were hidden away for many years in an obsolete water tower at Doncaster Grammar school. Some of the collection is on display and plans are in hand for another building to house the rest. You don’t have to be a railway enthusiast to go. There are other displays relating to the history of Doncaster, which goes back to Roman times. AND admission is free!
