SAINT KYNABURGA
On Friday 28th April, 25 members of the group paid a return visit after 6 years to the spectacular church at the Roman settlement of Castor when we were told about the vast history named after the Saxon Princess Kynaburga. The three tables on the tower alone made the visit special as shown in the photo.
There was a large pottery works in the town of some 12,000 Romans and some pieces are still being found during excavations. Soldiers were billeted there to suppress any rebels. The Normans then continued to devellop the church to what we see today. It is rated by some experts as one of the top ten parish churches in the UK. The town was on a major road, Kings Street via Bourne and Ermine Street to Lincoln where the castle was built to protect the city.
The Romans then moved inland to create the Great North Road through Stamford.
