Drama Group - June 2022

RoundOfApplause

A Round of Applause!

After an enforced absence of two years, we were looking forward to the Drama Group once more taking to the stage and we were not disappointed. The performances, introduced by Group Leader and Director Dianne, covered the serious, hilarious and mysterious, an altogether entertaining mixture.

The programme opened with a thought provoking poem by Lemn Sissay, read by Dee, Margaret, Pat and Ann. ‘Invisible Kisses’ certainly gave us something to ponder on.

Following on, Sharon and Peter brilliantly performed a hairdressing sketch written by Pam Ayres which raised much laughter.  Quite how Sharon managed to chat non-stop for 15-minutes, snipping away at Peter’s hair, while tottering on 5-inch heels was amazing.  A great husband and wife act.

A swift scene change took us to a middle-class suburban sitting room, complete with corpse, for the whodunnit, “Murder in Market Deeping”; a spoof on Sherlock Holmes with a modern-day twist.

The plot involved the murder of Mr Hunter, who was ‘done in’ by a blow to the back of the head. Detective Inspector Watson, masterfully played by Steve, was totally baffled, as was his sidekick, PC Binns, amusingly played by Terry; that is until Holmes, convincingly played by Philip, smugly provided the murder weapon —  a large leg of lamb!  Peggy stole the show as the charlady, Molly Simms, while Chris was the hapless scapegoat, Nesbitt.

The cast kept up the pace, and had us guessing right through to the surprise dénouement, when Holmes, having fallen for the seductive Mrs Hunter, played alluringly by Patti, was shocked when she revealed that she was Dorothea Moriarty!

The set was constructed by Peter, and Linda organised the scenery and props, with additional help from other cast members. David, once again, loyally provided the sound and vision, while Darren was on video.

So, were we left wondering who really dunnit?  We can only presume that the Leg of Lamb was well-cooked in a hot oven later, to destroy the evidence!
