Report on trip to Lichfield 20th July 2023
40 members made a very smooth trip via Rugby Services (surely the modern standard for 2023) to Lichfield, where most of us headed straight for the cathedral – unique in having 3 spires, the central one of which is presently encased in scaffolding. The interior is truly impressive and, as promised, the organ was being tuned! The weather was good enough for us to leave umbrellas folded up as we explored what is a fairly compact city, notable buildings being Dr. Johnson’s birthplace and the Erasmus Darwin museums (oh, how we miss Stamford’s museum!). Erasmus was Charles Darwin’s grandfather and a remarkable polymath whose inventions included a safe steering mechanism for carriages and a canal boat lift, both using principles still in use today. Another point of interest in one of the attractive parks is a statue to Edward John Smith, captain of Titanic, who bravely went down with the ship.
Many thanks to driver Graham and Shaw’s for another great day out.
