Sandringham Estate Visit
The Travel Group had a beautifully sunny day to visit Sandringham on 10th May. We were guided round the down stairs reception rooms and the most striking thing was how domestic the arrangements were. It really is a county house retreat and though well furnished, it is of a smaller scale than many country houses. The house appears vast from the outside but that is because it was built to accommodate the 'essential' domestic staff that the nobility took with them on a visit in the 19th Century. There are only 29 bedrooms for Royals and guests. Upon walking into the parish church of St Mary Magdalene you immediately knew this was no ordinary parish church. There was intricate decoration on the surfaces and the altar table and altarpiece were of silver. A fascinating display of Victorian High Gothic.
